Question

I am 80 years old and was diagnosed in early 2000. I manaed with diet for a while but have been on insulin for 6 years. Lately my sugar levels have started to increase and i can't pin point anything different to cause it. I have been told bananas and grapes could be the culprits. Can you offer any thoughts?

Amy's Answer

Hi! There are numerous reasons why blood sugars will increase; stress, illness, infection, less insulin produced over time from the pancreas and the types and quantities of food you are eating. Yes, bananas and grapes are carbohydrate sources that do require insulin however, it may be best to have an Endocrinologist evaluate your situation. If you have been on the same dose of insulin for a while now, you may require an adjustment. This may be a good time for a thorough evaluation as to why this is happening. In the meantime, take a look at what you are eating. Has your diet increased in carbohydrate grams at all throughout the day? If your diet has increased in carbohydrates at all and the insulin doses have not changed, blood sugars will increase. I hope this is helpful to you.
