Question

I was recently diagnosed with divertic??? I can't remember the spelling. I'm trying to find recipes & foods to eat & not to eat. Is there any of your recipes that you can suggest to help me?

Amy's Answer

Diverticulitis is when bacteria gets caught in out pouches of the intestinal lining and cause inflammation and sometimes infection.
Doctors are not clear on exactly why this happens. At one time, the thinking was to avoid any foods with nuts, seeds or popcorn because the hulls of the popcorn seemed to aggravate this issue further however, there have not been definitive studies to support this. It is now believed that a diet high in fiber and adequate amounts of fluid per day are suggested to keep the intestinal transit time less and intestinal track moving. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables and 25-35 grams of fiber per day (which is alot if you are not used to it) is suggested. Start slow with the fiber. Choose whole grains and foods rich in nutritional value. These foods are generally high in fiber. Drink at least 6-8 8 ounce glasses of water per day and 30 minutes of activity, 5 days per week. If you are very worried, avoid nuts and small seeds and popcorn. Some people do with diverticulitis, some do not. I would definitely suggest increasing the fiber in your diet and decreasing fried foods and sweets. Look for the recipes on this website that contain the most fiber and make choices based on high fiber items. I hope this helps!
Take care and feel free to ask me if you have any further questions. It always is a good idea to discuss this further with your physician as he or she may wish for you to avoid nuts/seeds/popcorn as I discussed here.
