Lantus and weight loss
My mom is Type 2, recently diagnosed and also recently put on Lantus, once daily, at night. Since starting it she has lost 20 pounds in a short frame of time. Her doctor says she is anemic but has not given her any advice on ways to keep the weight on. Any ideas?

You might try discussing this with a nutritionist and/or diabetes educator. Your mother's primary care physician likely has a list of folks you can call. If not, try your local hospital because they likely have a diabetes educator or can point you in the right direction.

Hello.
I would first make sure her blood sugars are under control. Have her test her blood sugar in the morning and 1 1/2-2 hours after her meals to see if she is in control. Her morning blood sugars should be 80-110 mg/dl and after meals should be no higher than 180 mg/dl. If she is too high, this may be the source of her weight loss. In the meantime, I would re-visit why she has anemia and how severe is the anemia? The doctor should be able to give you a clearer picture of that to make you feel less stressed about that. If her blood sugars are still too high, I would also discuss this with the physician as well. I hope that this helps.
