Caregivers - Don't Forget About Yourself!
I had a very candid discussion today with a daughter who acted as a caregiver for her elderly mother. She had some questions about her mother's supplies and her voice alone conveyed the stress she was feeling. Not only was she responsible for the welfare of her own household but also needed to balance her mother's desire for independence with her basic need for safety.
I wanted to take a moment and recognize the selfless sacrifice these caregivers make every day. It can be frustrating, emotional, and stressful all at once. Finding ways to relieve the pressure that can build up under such heavy responsibility is crucial.
By taking a few moments to yourself you will be able to better handle the challenges that arise. Read a good book, take a long bath, or exercise - do whatever works best for you (I love to play with my dog after a stressful day, he always makes me laugh!)
What struggles do you face as a caregiver and how do you balance it all?

Patience,
I do hear stories like this all of the time. People overwhelmed trying to provide good care while trying to take care of a loved one and themselves at the same time. It is often very difficult to balance this care to all areas of life. The most important issue is making certain that you have the oxygen mask on yourself before assisting others. In other words, you need to make sure you are cared for in order to care for loved ones. Decide what your needs are and make sure you are taking care of your health and well being and try to maintain this balance. It will be difficult, but will allow you to have the energy you need to endure.
