Will my Diabetes ever go away?
Perhaps one of the most popular questions that I receive is the question of, "will my diabetes ever go away?" When that question is asked, the individual looking at me is just waiting eagerly for my response to be "yes". Unfortunately once you have the diagnosis of diabetes, the diabetes diagnosis does tend to stay with you however, depending upon the severity and type of your diabetes, it can be treated in different ways depending upon other factors that may affect your blood sugars.
If you have type 1 diabetes, you are insulin requiring and will resume on insulin until there is a cure for type 1 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes can sometimes be improved by diet, exercise and weight loss. The more consistent one is with treating type 2 diabetes with lifestyle changes of diet, exercise and weight loss, the better the position you will be in for decreasing medication and how often you test your blood sugars. Now remember, everyone is different and your health care provider can give you some idea of what they think your situation is.
I never make promises to people when they ask me if they could work towards decreasing their medications however, if I see a glimpse at all of the ability with diet, exercise and weight loss to being diet controlled without medication, I say go for it, work towards less medication.
If you have type 2 diabetes, are sedentary and have weight to lose, I do suggest that your make changes in your lifestyle to place you in a position to possibly require less medication. Diabetes does progress over time however, being within your BMI (Body Mass Index) and being on
a consistent exercise program and positive lifestyle changes with diet will possibly help you in the assistance of preventing further medication or possibly prevent medication all together in managing your diabetes.
Empower yourself to make a change.
