Exercise with a capital E!
Exercise is such an incredibly powerful tool in our diabetes health programs.
Here's the way I look at it:
For a type 2 diabetic, either due to lack of insulin in the blood or resistance to insulin in our cells, we just end up with too much glucose in the wrong place ... in our blood rather than in our cells! To me, insulin is the key that unlocks the door in our cells that allows the glucose to move into our cells. Anything that increases the receptivity of our cells to insulin is enormously beneficial to us.
Enormously beneficial.
And that is where exercise plays a big part.
Glucose is ushered into our cells by special proteins called GLUT-4 transporters. Insulin causes these transporters to rise to the surface of our cells and let glucose in. Well, exercise does the same thing ... it causes these transporters to rise to the surface of our cells and let glucose in.
Therefore, when you hear the saying 'exercise clears the blood of glucose', there is truth to it.
See how exercise is enormously beneficial?
Experts say that starting with a 20 minute walk each day can immediately start this positive effect in your life.
What say ye?
Put on those walking shoes and walk!

Great advice Terry. You can even start out with small exercises in your home. If you're just getting started, try arm lifts using canned food for weights, or step exercises while watching TV. I have found it also helps to have those distractions while exercising so you don't focus on the fact that you're exercising. :)

Walking is so great, almost anyone can do it :) Get a walking buddy and then you'll be more likely to stick with it, too!

Terry, this is so true and extremely easy to implement. I own an elliptical machine, but I do not always like it or make myself adhere to using it! There are days that it is simpler and faster to head out the door and take a brisk walk around the neighborhood. I've found that when I get bored walking around by myself, it becomes great fun again if you involve some buddies. There is a group in my neighborhood that walks together, and we hold each other accountable! It is a GREAT way for us to catch up with each others' lives and reduce stress while at the same time getting some excercise.

Taking the stairs to the 5th floor at work is a good start, but some mornings the elevator is just so tempting!
