Scott K. Johnson
Hi, my name is Scott Johnson and I have lived with type 1 diabetes since 1980.
I was five years old then, and diabetes was much different. At that age, I'm sure the diagnosis was harder on my parents than it was on me. I had my share of highs and lows that affected my daily life, but like all kids, I found a way to deal with it so I could get back to playing. Kids are incredibly resilient.
As I got older, the mental and emotional issues around life with diabetes started to play a larger role. I had all of these vague thoughts and feelings that I couldn't process as a five year old kid. Or a 15 year old teen, or a 35 year old adult. The psychological side of diabetes is complex. It is tied and twisted into every aspect of life, and it is often very hard to sift out and "work on". So I started writing about it. It was, and continues to be, nothing more than my experiences with, and thoughts around, life with diabetes.
The simple exercise of choosing words to describe some of those thoughts and feelings is incredibly therapeutic for me. It is really something special having an opportunity to work through all of that in a safe place where others can also share their experiences and ideas. I've learned so much, and learned that I have so much more to learn. And I've learned that communicating with others living with diabetes is important to me.
Even after 30+ years, I don't have it all figured out. Diabetes is diabetes, and each day brings its own set of challenges, struggles, and successes. It is hard sometimes, and it wears on me sometimes. But I have learned that we have incredible resolve, and the fact that we wake up each day, trying to do a little better than we did yesterday, is a great testament to the strength we have.
